ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT: ESSENCE AND APPROACHES

Abstract

Introduction. In the current business environment, characterized by a high degree of macroeconomic volatility, globalization challenges, and intensifying competition, ensuring the long-term and effective functioning of enterprises is impossible without their continuous development. Despite the fact that the category of "development" is fundamental to economic science, contemporary academic discourse has yet to establish a unified, universally accepted approach to interpreting the essence of the concept of "enterprise development". A considerable number of researchers equate it exclusively with economic growth, disregarding qualitative transformations and the company's capacity to generate innovations, which gives rise to an objective need for an in-depth theoretical and methodological analysis of this category.

Purpose. The purpose of the study is a comprehensive investigation and systematization of existing theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding the essence of the category "enterprise development".

Materials and methods. The research materials comprise works by domestic and foreign scholars examining the theory of enterprise development within the frameworks of systemic, cybernetic, and synergetic approaches. The following scientific methods were employed in the research process: theoretical generalization and grouping (to systematize definitions of the category "enterprise development"); comparative analysis (to differentiate between mechanistic and holistic approaches to understanding development); analysis and synthesis (to formulate the authors' conceptual understanding of the studied category); and logical generalization of results (to draw conclusions).

Results. The article systematizes theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding the essence of enterprise development. It is demonstrated that the evolution of conceptual perspectives has followed a consistent path from mechanistic interpretations to a holistic approach, wherein development is regarded as an irreversible process over time grounded in system self-organization. The critical need to distinguish between the concepts of "development" and "economic growth" is outlined: unlike growth as a quantitative increase, development is an evolutionary process of qualitative and structural transformations generated by innovation. It is substantiated that enterprise development represents a long-term, managed or self-managed process of permanent quantitative and qualitative changes, realized through adaptive or bifurcation mechanisms, and inherently present at every stage of the enterprise's life cycle.

Discussion. Further research is proposed to focus on the elaboration and formalization of comprehensive mechanisms for managing enterprise development, grounded in the holistic approach and enabling the effective adaptation of company strategies in accordance with the specific nature of crisis shocks and the stages of the enterprise life cycle. This will create a conceptual foundation for addressing applied challenges in the management of socio-economic systems.
